This Sumo Pool started in 1997 at Misawa Air Base in Japan.  My interest in Sumo began a few years before that when I started watching Sumo on TV (NHK) and participating in a Sumo Pool at the Relax. The Relax is a bar just outside the main gate in a place called “the alley”.

The Relax Sumo Pool was different though, in that it was more geared for daily participation.  Slips were printed with a listing of the day’s matches. You selected who you thought would win each bout and the player that had the most correct picks won that day’s kitty.  If you were playing for the whole tournament, your daily record was added up and whoever had the most points at the end of the Basho, was the winner.

Gunga’s Internet Sumo Pool (G.I.S.P.) is a tribute to the memory of the Relax Sumo Pool and Marty-san, its proprietor, and to all the die-hard Sumo fans (mostly from Security Hill) who used to frequent the Relax.
